Sommelier Jung Ha-bong. Former director of wine at JW Marriott Seoul and current Sofitel Ambassador at Seoul Hotel & Serviced Residences .

1. Korean culture is becoming very popular in the west. Do you think Korean wine will become more popular in the west as a result?

“Seoul, the capital of Korea, became the fourth city in Asia to receive a Michelin guide in 2017. Naturally, the three star is a Korean restaurant.(Gaon and Layeon) . As a result, Korean wines are also growing little by little, so I think Korean wines will be known to the West little by little.”

2. If you had to recommend Korean wine to someone wanting to try, what wines would you say are the best?

“The best Korean wine 'Grand Coteau Cheonsu '  (White wine)  - It is a local variety of Korea. It is a white wine and good matching for Korean food. “

3. What makes Korean wine different from traditional European style wines?

“Korea is currently making many attempts in two regions, Yeongdong and Yeongcheon. Because wine is made from a variety that was previously grown for food.(ex-Muscat Bailey A , Cambell ). So Korean wines tend to be a bit sweet. However, nowadays, try to make various styles of wine . International varieties have not been cultivated yet.”

4. Outside of grape produced wines what are some other wine styles you like from Korea?

“Korea has consumed more than 85% of red wine. However, in recent years, a variety of sparkling wines(Prosecco and cava)  and white wines are gaining market share.”
